How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in an Interview

"Tell me about yourself" is the most common way an interview opens, and how you answer it sets the tone for everything that follows. The mistake most freshers make is rambling through their whole life story. Recruiters do not want that. They want a short, confident, relevant summary of why you are a good fit.

The Present - Past - Future formula

The cleanest structure is three short parts, in this order:

• Present: who you are right now (your course, year, and one thing you are known for).
• Past: a relevant project, internship, or skill that proves you can do the job.
• Future: why you are excited about this specific role or company.

A sample answer

"I am a final-year Computer Science student at CSVTU. Over the last year I have focused on web development and built a full-stack project that lets students track their placement prep. Working on it taught me React, Node, and how to ship something people actually use. I am now looking for a frontend role where I can keep learning from a strong engineering team, which is exactly why this position excites me."

Quick tips

• Keep it to 60 to 90 seconds. Practice out loud until it feels natural, not memorised.
• Lead with what is relevant to the job, not your hobbies.
• End on the role, so the interviewer has an obvious next question to ask.
