10 Common HR Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

The HR-round classics, with short sample answers.

Most campus HR rounds pull from the same set of questions. If you have honest, structured answers ready for these ten, you will walk in far more confident. Do not memorise them word for word. Understand the point of each question and make the answer your own.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Give a 60-second Present, Past, Future summary: who you are now, one relevant project, and why this role excites you.

2. What are your strengths?

Pick two strengths that matter for the job and back each with a quick real example, not just adjectives.

3. What is your biggest weakness?

Name a real but non-fatal weakness, then show the concrete step you are taking to improve it.

4. Why should we hire you?

Match your top 2 skills to what the role needs, and show genuine enthusiasm for the company.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Show ambition and growth in a direction that fits the company, not a rigid job title.

6. Why do you want to work here?

Mention something specific about the company (product, tech, culture) so it is clearly not a copy-paste answer.

7. Tell me about a challenge you faced.

Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep the focus on what you did and what you learned.

8. Are you a team player or a solo worker?

Say both, with examples. Most roles need someone who can collaborate and also own tasks independently.

9. Do you have any questions for us?

Always ask one. Try: what does success look like in the first 6 months, or what does the team work on next?

10. What are your salary expectations?

For a fresher, it is fine to say you are open and trust their standard structure for the role, unless you have a researched range.
